Graduate Programme Doctoral Studentships in the Department of Pathology at University of Cambridge

Graduate Programme Applicants must have obtained, or expect to obtain, at least the equivalent of an honorary degree at one of Britain 02:01 the following areas: biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, physics, applied mathematics, computer science, computational biology or related scientific discipline.

Open Scholarship for International Students: None

Graduate Programme Scholarship Description: Three 3-year PhD studentships are available as part of a collaboration which recently funded between the groups at the University of Cambridge and at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology.
The three projects below are available:
Graduate Programme Project 1: Parasite Gene Expression: Determine the relationship between parasite and host gene expression by analyzing changes in gene expression of transcription during infection.
Graduate Programme Project 2: Host Cell Phosphoproteome: investigate how the parasite undermine host cell functions by observing the effect of parasite secretory rhoptry organelle protein kinase by the signal and the host cell metabolism. http://www.callforpapersinfo.com

Graduate Programme Project 3: Development of aptamer affinity reagents to track protein kinase rhoptry: this technology development project will examine the use of technology, nucleic acid aptamer-based reagent to provide high specificity for tracking rhoptry protein kinases.
Infections by members of the phylum Apicomplexa protozoan parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii and Plasmodium spp (malaria) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, there is no functional vaccine and drug treatment effectiveness is reduced because of the emergence of drug resistant parasites. Development of new treatments will depend on understanding how obligate intracellular parasites grow and develop in the cell / host host and how they subvert host functions to get the nutrients and protection from immunological attack.
Graduate Programme General theme of the above project is to explore, with various approaches, mechanisms that undermine T. gondii host cell to obtain nutrients and regulate immunological attack. So the project will draw specifically for the scientists aim to work in areas vital to human health today, especially those who are interested to work as part of an interdisciplinary team.

PhD Position American University Program in Chemistry

American University Program ZnO nano-materials have unique properties to the printing technology, performance materials and solar cell applications. Doping ZnO with transition metal elements such as Fe, Co, Mn or Cr causes the material with a completely different behavior of magnetic and optical excitation. This new research direction known as diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS). DMS materials based on ZnO can not only show ferromagnetism at room temperature on doping with transition metal ions such as Fe, Cr, Co, and Mn but also at the same show ferromagnetic and semiconductor properties that are essential for new spintronic devices (spin LEDs? S? , Spin valve transistor) and magneto-optical components.

The
American University Program main objective of this project are to:

i) develop new methodologies for the synthesis of undoped and transition metal ions doped ZnO nano-particles,
ii) identify the nature or origin of the intrinsic defect centers with spectroscopic methods, mainly by EPR,
iii) understand the mechanisms underlying the effects of particle size for ZnO,
iv) introducing transition metal ions (Cr3 Mn2 +, +, Co2 +, Fe3 +) and ZnO materials and to investigate the interaction of native and extrinsic defects and properties of ferromagnetic and anti-ferromagnetic. http://www.callforpapersinfo.com
